When an ISO certification helps to improve continuously and that is even fun

In autumn 2005 the company Auto Tempel AG could move into the building, which was built in 222 days at Tempelstrasse in Thun Allmendingen. Marco Frozza has been working in the automotive industry for 50 years. Marco, who was 14 years old, already dreamed of having his own car garage when he started his apprenticeship. A little later the idea of his own garage business with an apartment above it was formed. 3 years ago he decided to have the company certified according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

Read what made him do it.

Martina: You've been in this business for a long time. What have been the biggest challenges since you started?

Marco: I took about three attempts to start a company. Then, on December 6, 2004, I founded Auto Tempel AG together with a partner. Later, other shareholders joined us. Since then, the president of the board of directors and I have been responsible for the fate of the company as delegate and managing director.

Martina: Your company is ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified. What was the reason for the certification?

Marco: I already had experience with ISO. In 1991, I was one of the Q Tema managers at Mercedes Benz Automobil AG in Bern. I realized that it doesn't help if processes are prescribed - but that they have to be worked out with the employees from the bottom up. I was already familiar with ISO 9001 for quality, but less so with ISO 14001 for sustainability.

However, it was mainly external influences that prompted us to consider ISO certification. We noticed that a label or certification was increasingly being asked for when submitting an offer in public tenders.

Martina: What aspect of ISO certification is central for you and your company?

Marco: What fascinated me in the conversation at that time was that the ISO standards were adapted as of 2015 and could thus be integrated much better into the daily work - i.e. into the operational business. With our ISO auditor, Cederic Zeller, the relationship is right. Together we have already been able to find very good solutions that move our company forward. Furthermore, the ISO certification, together with other positive influences, led us to rethink and redefine our vision, mission and corporate values.

Central for me is the further development in the area of after-sales. And there, for me, it's all about process optimization, because this results in greater efficiency and, ultimately, a higher return on investment.

Why was the ISO 14001 environmental and sustainability management system introduced?

  • ISO is an internationally recognized standard

  • personal contribution to the environment is implemented with concrete measures

  • Sustainability is expected by customers and partners

  • Toyota AG's "Environmental Challenge 2050" strategy means that the sustainability of the value chain is continuously analyzed, evaluated and optimized
